Open Court Curriculum

The goal of Open Court Reading is to efficiently and effectively teach children to decode then comprehend so that they can read a variety of literature types.  Open Court Reading has organized lessons--teaching children to read and write with skill and confidence.

Open Court Reading teaches each of these essential concepts:

· The alphabetic principle

· Print awareness

· Phonemic awareness

· Phonics

· Comprehensive strategies and skills

· Inquiry techniques and strategies

· The writing process and writing skills

· Spelling and vocabulary

· Grammar, usage and mechanics of language

Each unit explores a comprehensive, interesting theme.  Each theme introduces either a new alphabet sound, high-frequency word or both.  The curriculum is organized into eight unit themes.

1.   I’m Special

2.   Families Everywhere

3.   All Kinds of Friends

4.   Helping Hands

5.   Let’s Go

6.   Senses

7.   At the Farm

8.   Changes

Each lesson has several program components which introduce concepts in reading, writing, critical thinking, science, social studies and language arts.

Throughout lessons, students do more than just read literature.  They also ask questions, discuss, research, write about, and think about the concepts and ideas centered around the themes they read.
