Message from the Superintendent

Dear Covington Independent students, staff, and families,

On Opening Day, I invited our staff to be the light for our students and one another. A month into the school year, I see what that can look like in practice: a teacher helping a student find their footing, a staff member making sure a family feels welcome, or a school leader working with their team to create the conditions for learning. I am grateful to our teachers, leaders, and staff for the steady work of strengthening instruction and building school cultures where students can belong, engage, and learn.

I am equally grateful to everyone who joined our first community forum. Families, staff, and community members spoke with honesty and hope about what is working in Covington Independent, what needs our attention, and what we could accomplish together. Thank you for giving your time and your voice to that conversation.

As a District of Innovation, we have an opportunity to imagine new possibilities. We also have a responsibility to build on a strong foundation. Our plan for excellence will protect what works, address the gaps where we are not yet meeting people’s needs, and turn promising ideas into lasting practice. We want our students to leave us ready not only to graduate, but to thrive in the lives they choose.

Your voice belongs in this work. Here are ways to participate:

  • Everyone: Complete our anonymous survey by November 17, the end of my first 100 days.

  • Certified and Classified Staff: Share your interest in the Staff Advisory Council. We will share meeting dates so you can decide whether participation works for you.

  • Students: Complete the Student Advisory Council interest form yourself or ask a staff member to nominate you. We plan to include five fifth graders from each elementary school and five students from each grade level in grades 6–12. We will share meeting dates and selection information soon.

  • Students, families, staff, and community members: Join us at one of the next community forums on either October 15 or November 18. Register here

Being the light also means being willing to see clearly: to celebrate what is good, face what needs to change, and help one another move forward. Thank you for helping shape a Covington Independent where every student, every classroom, and every school  has the opportunity to flourish.
