The Covington Board of Education was presented with a check for $61,800 from EducateNKY to help schools with student and family engagement.
Cheye Calvo, president and CEO of EducateNKY presented the check at the board meeting on September 25. Covington schools that applied for the agency's Family, Youth and Community Partnership grants received the following amounts: Holmes High School, $20,000; Sixth District, $10,000; Ninth District, $9,000; Latonia Elementary, $9,000; John G. Carlisle, $8,800 and Biggs Early Childhood, $5,000.
Each school will use the grant award for specific projects. For instance, Holmes will tackle chronic absenteeism by reducing barriers to attendance, while Ninth District hopes to improve attendance and reading proficiency by tackling chronic absenteeism and providing more targeted literacy support.
At the meeting, Calvo also announced that Educate NKY will be donating $25,000 for the school board's nationwide search for the district's next superintendent. Superintendent Alvin Garrison's contract ends in June. Calvo said his agency supports the board's expansive search that includes getting input from the community. The board has hired the Chicago-based firm, the Alma Advisory Group, to help with the search. The cost of the nationwide search is $65,000, said Tom Haggard, chair of the board of education.
