The Portrait of a Learner is the definitive "North Star" guiding the future of Covington Independent Public Schools. It outlines the specific skills, mindsets, and competencies students need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Rather than focusing solely on traditional test scores and letter grades, Covington educators have been working on this portrait for more than a year.
"We are excited to have a team of teachers that have been working with our Portrait of a Learner and who have been creating opportunities to embed these seven competencies into our students' daily lives,'' said Tony Magner, director of federal programs. "We are confident that as students develop these skills and dispositions, they will be ready for success in college, the workforce, the military, and in life.
What It Means for Your Child
The district's K-12 approach breaks these big goals down into smaller, age-appropriate learning progressions. This means whether your child is just starting kindergarten or preparing to graduate from Holmes High School, they are actively practicing these skills every single day.
In Elementary School: Building foundational habits, learning to share ideas clearly, and collaborating nicely with peers during group activities.
In Middle School: Taking greater ownership of their academic journey, thinking critically about real-world problems, and learning to manage their time.
In High School: Applying these skills through mentorships, innovative coursework, and "defenses of learning" where they present their growth directly to community members.
How to Support the Vision
Education is a shared community effort. You can learn more about how the district embeds these competencies into daily instruction by checking the official Covington Independent Public Schools Strategic Plan.
Additionally, parents and families are invited to directly shape how these innovative learning environments function. Keep an eye out for upcoming community forums hosted by the district to share your input on programming, courses, and student success.
